Despite Essien being 33, you'd have to think that if we get him then he'll be incredible in League 2.

Will wait and see!

Very strange - assume DD must know him well. Agree you would think even at half fitness he could play at this level as a holding midfielder.

Wouldn't we have to release the other 23 players to afford his wages? I suppose he could treat us as pro bono voluntary work though .......

It would have to be a question of him wanting to play some kind of football local to his home and having made enough money not to care what he earns. Still think its unlikely but there is enough circumstantial indicators with the Chelsea connection , his proximity to Crawley , his attendance at last nights game and DD's proclamation of signing an international.

The only point that doesn't add up is the DD statement the target is under contract. Essien was released by Panathanykos end of last year I believe and therefore a free agent.

said the new player would be available for Stevenage.

Maybe allowing for international clearance.

Unless the 'under contract' talk was some sort of smokescreen as the deal may take longer than a usual one due to the international clearance ruling?

Never sure how it works with signing players whose last club was abroad, but I'm aware Cheltenham are going through similar in signing free agent Monakana.

Would be quite a signing if we were to land Essien, however, I can't see it. Still hope to be wrong!
