Well done to Albion. I think it's good for Sussex football to have them in the Prem.
Chris Hughton really has done an outstanding job after the shambles of the Sami Hyppia era.
Then again if you can afford to lose £71,000 a day it helps. |

I agree with Thad that the people who stuck with them through thick and thin should enjoy there trips to old Trafford Stamford bridge etc.
But there is not 25,000 of them |

Just like the Crawley 9,000 then. |
Sort of.....that 9,000 was made up of people who went for a day out to watch the local non league side play Man Utd. I know people who went that day who never seen Crawley play before or since.
Brightons bandwagon started with their new ground. |

Brighton were getting 9000 when they were bottom - and well adrift - of the fourth tier, because that's all the ground held. They got 6000 and then 9000 at the Withdean - again, that was full to capacity (ok, there were times when the capacity was 9000 but it wasn't full).
Generally, they have always had a large fan-base of 10000s across the county, and it is the new ground that initially increased their attendances almost three-fold, not their success. With a fantastic new ground holding nearly 30000, you can't really blame an existing support for becoming more active and filling the ground. |

Sounds a good yarn but that's stretching it a bit.
The year they finished bottom of Div 3 (1996-7) they averaged 5,844. The capacity of Goldstone at that point was 11,500.
Up until Christmas when Steve Gritt took over it wasn't a third full and even then it rarely sold out. |

But the bit about "they were getting 9000 because that's all the ground held" isn't right. Firstly the capacity was never 9000 and secondly it was never full. The last game was the only time it was sold out (apart from a few tickets Doncaster didn't sell).
The idea that there were lots of Brighton fans knocking around who couldn't get in to their games is not true.
It did change when they moved to the Withdean but the capacity was much smaller and by then the Dick Knight revival had started. |

When they were at Preistfield and Withdean quite a few people abstained but the level of grassroots activism was enormous.
Tremendous credit must go to Tony "The Lizard" Bloom who has put HIS money into the revival, but the real hero of the saga is Dick Knight who was the figurehead they could rally around when matters were really dire...
...it is nice that he is celebrated in the town. I even saw a notice outside a pub in Kemp Town declaring that "Every night is Dick Knight"  |

Indeed. His book is a really good read. Had to take on pretty much everyone from the previous owners (Archer & Co) to the local authorities to the politicians and the old farts at the FA.
Not to mention the likes of Steve Gritt who performed a miracle. |
